Kinetic Kaboom: Popsicle Stick challenge

Students will build a pattern of popsicle sticks, we can explore the forces of tension, compression, and watch as energy moves like a wave through a system converting potential energy into kinetic motion!

Prep & Classroom Structure

Prep:

  • Watch video to understand the instructions

  • Have print out ready with pattern instructions

  • Pre-pack popsicle sticks in ziplock for each group ensuring even # of sticks.

During:

  • Break students up into groups of 4.

  • Give a time limit, the goal isnt to use up all of the sticks, but to atleast start a chain reaction together.

  • During observation have students compare chain lengths, measure travel time, calculate speed, or record slow-motion video to analyze energy transfer.

  • Considering how much patience this exercise requires, this is best for 4-5 grades.

What's happening: Bent/interlocked sticks store elastic potential energy. Once released, energy transfers from one stick to the next and becomes kinetic energy, producing a traveling chain reaction.

Materials

• 80–150 jumbo 6' craft sticks per team/class station

• Flat table or floor work surface

• Pattern task card

• Safety goggles

• Measuring tape optional

• Slow-motion tablet/phone recording optional (teacher-managed)

Project Instructions

  1. Learn the repeating over-under weaving pattern with 5–8 sticks.

  2. Extend the chain while keeping stored tension controlled.

  3. Stop at a designated length or time and clear the release zone.

  4. Predict the direction/speed of the chain reaction.

  5. Release the end stick.

  6. Rebuild and test how chain length or pattern consistency changes the result.
