What's happening:

Magnets create magnetic fields that can exert forces without direct contact. Magnets can attract magnetic materials; two magnets can attract or repel depending on which poles face one another. Magnetic force weakens as distance increases.

Materials

• Cardboard or paper plate

• Bar or wand magnet

• Large paper clips or magnetic washers

• Paper character/robot attached to paper clip

• Markers

• Craft sticks/cardboard strips for maze walls

• Tape/glue

Project Instructions

  1. Create a paper character

  2. Draw/color a maze on a large paper plate based on your character's theme

  3. Attach the paper cut out to the paperclip by piercing through the paper

  4. Put the paperclip character at the start.

  5. Hold a magnet wand under the board and align it to the paperclip location

  6. Move the magnet to guide the character through the maze without touching it.

  7. Test how far the magnet can be from the paperclip and still move it.

  8. Optional: test attraction and repulsion with two magnets.
